Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
The Gospel According to Mr. Rogers
September Series – Pike Road UMC 2026
A childhood staple for me was the classic program, “Mr. Rogers,” which focused on the community and a make-believe kingdom reflecting characters who face the same things we do. I loved Mr. Rogers as he offered a way to think of the world and how to be a good neighbor. And the puppets and trolley made it all the better!
The first Mr. Rogers was a little different, though. The first Mr. Rogers was Jesus of Nazareth, who came with lessons on community and how to get along inside our neighborhood as well as with those outside or new to our neighborhood. The words of the gospel of Matthew reflect the teachings of our Lord’s focus on living in right relationship with God and one another. For the month of September, as we get back into a rhythm with the school year, we learn how Jesus invites us to “be good neighbors” and how all of us are called to see where Christ meets us on the journey.
